Open the Settings app.
Tap General.
Tap About.
Tap the name of your AppleCare plan. If you don't see an AppleCare plan, tap Limited Warranty or Coverage Expired for more information.
Check when your coverage expires
Go to mysupport.apple.com.
Sign in with your Apple ID.
Choose your device. The expiration date is listed along with other details about your coverage.
Get the agreement number or proof of coverage
Go to mysupport.apple.com.
Sign in with your Apple ID.
Choose your device.
Click View Proof of Coverage. If you don't see your proof of coverage, make sure that you set up your Apple ID with two-factor authentication.

Apple changed the rules when they changed the Applecare offerings available about a year ago. The rules now state that Applecare+ can only be purchased within 60 days of purchase of the device. In some countries (such as the link to Asia I am posting), they are still offering the old Applecare which can be purchased within one year. In the US, only Applecare+ is now available. That may be one reason why you were not given a definitive answer.
